lyrics

Which will be my best reward?
The sounds in my mind like the flutter of wings
The big dogs who came to the door
as I stared seeing tobacco stained rings

And I walked down the muggy street
past the shoe shine and the old hotel
The stars like the eyes of Ravens
the rumble of the distant train and a Wurlitzer
played an old familiar waltz for me
when I was Sandy

The North star sprinkled the city in gold
Where did all that time go?
and it’s true I often thought of leaving
ride the horizon’s edge to the end of the world

But back again I’d go to the streets I’ve always known
and at home, dip my hair in ink and write the dreams I’d tell no one
And I’d hear the slapping of waves from some distant sea
some memory calling out to me
when I was Sandy

And how could I forget that face
that face that smiles in the mirror
The seasons of mistakes and mellow fruitfulness
Of howling at the stars and falling to the floor

And I walked down that street again
the shoe shine’s gone and hotel too
and the stars still shine like the ravens’ eyes
and I walk down those old train tracks, looking back
I’m humbled by the innocence that still breaths free in me
because of Sandy
